Sir, - The Northern Ireland Secretary, Dr Mo Mowlam, is to be congratulated. Many of us undoubtedly had misgivings about her meeting with men who saw no other way to achieve their objectives than through violence.
We in all of Ireland should be grateful than the Labour Party is in power in Britain. Could one have ever perceived a Conservative Northern Secretary having such a "hands-on" approach as Dr Mowlam to the Northern situation? Her actions last week may have helped the peace process; but more importantly, at least for the moment, her down-to-earth approach may have saved lives and misery for both sides of the community and for that we must be eternally grateful. - Yours, etc.,
