A chara, - Mr John Hollihan, representing the Ranelagh and Milltown Residents' Association, told the Bord Pleanala oral hearing on the new multi-storey housing scheme in Milltown, as reported on February 20th in The Irish Times, that the area was "under siege by piecemeal development". He said that there was no integrated plan for the area and that since the loss to housing of Shamrock Rovers' ground at Glenmalure Park, sites were "falling like dominoes".
Curiously, as the chairman of KRAM, the organisation of Shamrock Rovers patrons and supporters which fought to prevent the destruction of this important, Dublin sports facility, I have no recollection of having received any support from the Ranelagh or Milltown Residents' Associations when the first of the dominoes was falling. On the contrary, our own understanding was that the Milltown residents rather welcomed the new developments, in preference to the once-a-fortnight visitation by match fans.
The acquiescence of the local residents' associations in the destruction of Glenmalure Park may, indeed, have opened the floodgates. - Beir bua,
