Madam, - As the Taoiseach contemplates the date for the general election, it must be hoped that he will avoid Thursday, June 7th.
This will be the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Messines, where members of the 16th (Irish) Division and 36th (Ulster) Division stood shoulder to shoulder. The Peace Park at Messines is a symbol for peace and reconciliation in Ireland. As anyone who has been there will know, it is a special place.
It would be a pity if the anniversary of such a symbolically significant event was to be overshadowed by the political squabbles that accompany an election campaign. - Yours, etc,
Rev IAN POULTON,
