Madam, - On May 28th 2000, the then Lord Mayor of Dublin Cllr Mary Freehill, unveiled a plaque to commemorate the founding of the Orange Order at Dawson Street in Dublin. This event, which included a civic reception for members of the Orange Order, was funded by Dublin City Council.
Is it not, therefore, somewhat perverse that the final headquarters of the leaders of the 1916 Rising at 16 Moore Street has been neglected to such an extent that it may well be too late to rescue it?
This considered insult to the memory of those who gave their lives for Irish freedom was reinforced by the recent erection of a memorial to Sir Francis Drake in Cork and the restoration of the monument to Queen Victoria in Dun Laoghaire. Shame on those who abdicated their responsibility to preserve sites of historical interest and shame on the rest of us for allowing it to happen. - Yours, etc,
TOM COOPER, Delaford Lawn, Knocklyon, Dublin 16.
