Sir, - Mr Ciaran Hegarty, senior engineer with Limerick County Council, states that the recently opened Nenagh bypass is now to be upgraded to a dual carriageway (The Irish Times, June 26th). Can somebody please explain to me why was this not done when the bypass was originally being built?
Anybody would know that the N7, which links two large cities, Dublin and Limerick, should be built to motorway/dual carriageway standards. The present Roscrea bypass is also totally inadequate and no doubt will itself have to be bypassed.
The Swords bypass is another example of short-sightedness. If this had been built to motorway standards originally, there would be no need for the bypass to the bypass now being built.
How many other examples are there like this around the country? It is hard enough to get new roads built in this country. If it's not snails holding up the building of roads (the Kildare bypass), it's the naked greed of farmers trying to extort unreasonable amounts of money for their land. At least when we do finally get around to building them, let's do them right first time round. - Yours, etc.,
Michael Sheehan, Greendale Avenue, Dublin 5.
