Sir, - I was very pleased to read Hugh Oram's article about the entry of MBNA into the Irish credit card market ("MBNA: the new kid on the block", The Irish Times, August 22nd). It is good to know that MBNA is already gaining a reputation for offering good service and good value to our customers. However, your article made two points that I feel must be corrected.

It states that "if an MBNA card is stolen, customers are liable for any fraudulent use." In fact, the customer is not liable for any fraudulent charges incurred on a lost or stolen MBNA card. Customers should not be expected to lead the fight against credit card fraud. That is a responsibility we take very seriously ourselves.

The article also states that "customers need pay only 5 per cent of the total balance due each month." That amount due each month is in fact 3 per cent of the total balance. Thank you for the opportunity to put the record straight. - Yours, etc., Ian Doherty,

MBNA Ireland,
