Sir, - Dervla Murphy (May 25th) is among a number of correspondents complaining that Big Brother is seeking to limit the public's understanding of the Nice Treaty. Do these people not realise that the treaty is not top-secret? The information is available to all who can be bothered to inform themselves. Are they waiting for some civil servant to come into their homes and give lessons on the treaty? At the very least, Denis Staunton's series of articles in The Irish Times should provide enough knowledge to make an informed choice.
In contrast to the Yes campaign, the anti-treaty side is conducting the usual campaign of misinformation, fabrications and lies. Despite this, the biggest threat to the treaty is the Yes campaign, which cannot seem to come up with any compelling reason to vote for the treaty.
We do not have any moral obligation to the citizens of Eastern Europe and our European partners always act in their own national interests - as we saw earlier this year when Mr McCreevy was ganged up on by all of our "friends". The only reason to vote Yes is if it is in our own national interest. - Yours, etc.,
Michael Dolan, Wilderness Grove, Clonmel, Co Tipperary.
