Nice Treaty Rejection

Sir, - I have been watching, with much interest, the debates on the Nice Treaty. It seems that the pro-Nice politicians have not stopped to think about what kind of image they are portraying to young people who in a few years will be at the polling stations. These future voters are seeing a Government which, when it gets an uncomfortable result, ignores it. This is not very good politics. Also, Mr Prodi's dismissive attitude to Irish voters will not make the next electorate very pro-Europe. Not that it matters, as we have little say in European politics.

If there is going to be a second referendum I predict that even fewer people will vote because the message that the Government and Europe are sending out is that they do not care about the result as they can always overrule our decision. It is because of this hypocritical attitude that many young people are anti-Nice, and their views will be heard in a few years' time - that i,s if we are still a democratic country by then. - Yours etc.,
