Sir, - Like so many eurosceptic contributors to this debate, W.V. Gorman (July 4th) just couldn't resist using the words "tyranny" and "suppression" when referring to the EU. I pondered this point, racking my brain to find examples of EU tyranny and suppression, and I think I've found some.
1. The EU suppressed the right of an Irish government to dismiss married women from the civil service, and to differentiate between men and women on pay and conditions. The rotters!
2. The EU forced us to have consumer rights across the union. Who do they think they are, taking away our right to be fleeced?
3. They forced the Government to provide clean drinking water. The cheek of them! It'll be clean air next if we don't watch them.
And then, to rub it in, they forced us to have 18 billion quid. Talk about a humiliating slap in the national face! Hitler and Stalin were terrible for that too, marching around Europe forcing people to take money.
Tyranny and suppression? Funny how, all across Europe, all the politicians with an penchant for uniforms, jackboots and extensive use of the right arm are anti-EU. Except in Britain, of course. In Britain they don't wear uniforms. - Yours, etc.,
