Madam, - The word "celebrate" is usually associated with rejoicing and festivities. The media, in several instances, have used this description in their reports of events marking the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls.

Surely "celebrate" is an ill-chosen word in connection with one of the most traumatic events in this country's history. Commemoration, or remembrance, would be a far better description when recalling the tragic flight which sounded the death knell of the old Gaelic order. - Yours, etc,
