No cycle lane on O'Connell St

Madam, - Recently I attempted to cycle down Dublin's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street

Madam, - Recently I attempted to cycle down Dublin's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street. Incredible though it seems, although there are vast swathes of pedestrian space, there is no cycle lane.

Cyclists must either use the bus lane or wobble between the lanes of traffic. I found myself forced to dismount and walk, fuming at my inability to navigate the main street of my capital city.

Since O'Connell street has been expensively redesigned in recent years, it seems hard to believe that the planners simply forgot to put in a cycle lane. Therefore one must conclude that a decision was made to exclude cyclists from the street.

Surely the Government should be trying to reduce both city gridlock and carbon dioxide emissions - and both aims are consistent with encouraging cyclists. - Yours, etc,
