Sir, - January 31st was an historic day in the 166 years of the Morse Code, when Valentia radio station signed off for ever. The last signal to the world was in Irish as the radio officer tapped out slan libh go leir. For whoever may wish at some future date, to write about Ireland's role in Morse transmission, I would like to record another last.
At 1518 GMT on May 22nd, 1958, as our Irish DC3, registration EIACL, named the St Declan landed at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, I transmitted our landing to Shannon Airport.
It was the last Morse message to be sent from an Irish aircraft. - Yours, etc., Dermot C. Clarke,
Wilson Road, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
