Madam, – I see Alan Titley was throwing little brickbats in my direction in last week's letters page (November 4th). It seems that my article in the Education Today section of The Irish Timeson November 2nd had him in a considerable heap.
For the record, I was asked by your education editor to set out my reform agenda in 10 bullet points.
It’s hard to understand from Prof Titley’s letter which of my proposals he is against. But I suspect that wasn’t his objective.
Throughout his letter, I couldn't help thinking that here is a man who has some anger issues to sort out. He is angry at me. He is angry at Fine Gael. Perhaps he is angry with The Irish Timesfor not asking him to comment on what needs to be done about Irish education.
Could it possible be that he is angry that Fine Gael had the temerity to suggest that compulsory Irish for students over 16 is simply not working? Are we possibly getting to the truth behind Prof Titley’s chip on, well, both shoulders?
I have always found that fanatics, be they of the language variety or not, have a tendency to go for the man rather than the ball. – Yours, etc,
