Sir, – Your Business section (January 24th) mentions the US government borrowing requirement at $16.4 trillion, converted in the article to euro at €12 billion!
Isn’t it time to cease converting, sometimes incorrectly, as above, (but to two decimal places), dollar and sterling amounts when detailing foreign news stories? Those few readers who actually care what $16.4 trillion dollars looks like in euro probably have a lot of time on their hands and could do their own calculations .
Similarly with temperatures, we went metric in Ireland during the 1970s and I feel, following a 40-year learning curve, we may no longer need the Fahrenheit equivalent when reading Weather Watch – Celsius will do. – Yours, etc,
