Madam, - I was not surprised by the very poor attendance at the Seve Trophy at the Heritage, Killenard (Sport, October 2nd). A friend and I travelled there by train and taxi. Access to the course at the Heritage Golf Club was refused. It was for the exclusive use of members and friends. Security staff were unaware of the location of the public entrance.
A Civil Defence driver kindly drove us approximately a mile-and-a-half to the entrance on a minor back road. We followed a four-ball for approximately two-and-a-half hours and adjourned for a meal and refreshments at the golf club. Access was refused for the same reasons as above.
We tried the Heritage Hotel and Spa. Again, no admission: reserved for residents and golfers only.
By contrast, we were well looked after in a local pub by a friendly and welcoming staff and returned to Dublin in mid-afternoon.
A wonderful golf course, but falling well short of a fáilte. I hope the Heritage and Fáilte Ireland will correct that by 2009. They are currently high handicappers in the hospitality area. - Yours, etc,
