Madam, - The Taoiseach's vision for 2007 and the development of further North-South co-operation (Opinion & Analysis, January 2nd) is most welcome. He is right that there is now a real opportunity to build on the work which has been done for relationships between all of the people on this island to develop in a healthy and positive way in the interests of all.
Co-operation Ireland has been at the forefront of this work for the past 25 years, working with communities from all sides and across borders.
It is encouraging to read his reaffirmation of the Government's commitment to social partnership and his view of the establishment of the independent consultative forum as well as learning about the discussions taking place with the British government and with Northern Ireland partners about innovative projects.
To assist in achieving this vision, he should utilise the recommendations about the future already being considered by communities and organisations on a North-South basis, such as the information that emanates from the "North-South think tank" chaired by Co-operation Ireland. This includes all major North-South non-government organisations and shares information and experience of North-South activities. There is also a very committed Oireachtas group supported by Co-operation Ireland and an ongoing media programme to highlight the successes and issues regarding cross-border relationships, particularly within communities.
It is good that the Taoiseach urges that we should all shoulder our responsibilities. We invite the Government to engage fully with all the organisations which are deeply committed to developing North-South co-operation and to involve them in helping shape a better future.
Co-operation Ireland has extensive networks and has secured support from a wide range of local and international communities and organisations and is keen to share the learning and experience of the past 25 years and play a full role in this year of opportunity for the island of Ireland. - Yours, etc, - Yours, etc,
