Sir, - The astounding creation of an inclusive agreement will be seen to have made and destroyed political careers in a long Stormont night. The Northern Irish political process has been imbued with credibility and integrity - attributes which are long overdue. Both David Trimble and Gerry Adams have begun to exhibit signs of statesmanship - a quality not previously required nor seen in either - and which do not arise in a self-righteous Robert McCartney, a narrow-minded Ian Paisley, a dour William Ross, or a juvenile Jeffrey Donaldson.
I salute those people who have shown the quality of character to pursue the process to its final plenary session; who have demonstrated vision and creativity; who have exhibited personal and political courage to create a workable basis for resolving this long and bitter conflict by transcending its futile, zero-sum nature. As fellow citizens they gain my respect.
Ulster Unionists should support David Trimble and his talks team colleagues. The British identity in Ireland is secure and respected, and their Union is safe. Unprecedented stability and a permanent end to the hurt and pain of armed conflict is now possible - if they choose to take responsibility for its creation by backing their leadership. - Yours, etc.,
John Hoey,
Belfast 15.
