Sir, - Like most writers I do not claim to have any special political expertise. However, as a man of Ulster (nine-county) Protestant background I would like to add my voice, for what it is worth, to those calling for a Yes vote in the referendum on May 22nd.
It is obvious that the Good Friday agreement does not wholly satisfy unionists or nationalists/ republicans, but it does offer an opportunity to end the tribal bloody-mindedness. Its acceptance might at last make it possible for Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter to live together peacefully on this island. The opportunity, if not now seized, may not come again until well into the next century.
I have little doubt that my literary forerunners, such as Sir Samuel Ferguson, AE (George William Russell), Joyce Cary, Forrest Reid, Robert Lynd, Louis MacNeice and John Hewitt would, were they alive, be on the side of positive action. - Yours, etc.,
Robert Greacen
