Madam, - Fr Paul Andrews ( The Irish Times, March 20th) should not be puzzled by the use of the term Roman Catholic.
The point at issue is not any of the things that he mentions. It is the fact that millions of Eastern Orthodox Christians, plus members of the churches of the Anglican Communion, plus members of a whole range of other churches think that the term "catholic" is wider in its application than its application to the Roman Catholic Church.
That is why all Christians are prepared to say that they believe in the Catholic Church when they recite the early creeds. - Yours, etc,
ROBERT MacCARTHY, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, St Patrick's Close, Dublin 8.
