Madam, - I agree with Dr Louise Sullivan (September 27th) when she speaks of the need for "a healthy and balanced diet".
I disagree with her contention that the Nutrition and Health Foundation (NHF) does not represent the interests of the food/drinks industry.
The NHF was established by the food and drinks industry. Its executive board is composed exclusively of representatives of this industry.
Understandably, the shareholders in these companies have a reasonable expectation that growth and profit will be the primary underlying objective of those whom they employ. This responsibility to shareholders must naturally influence motives and objectives.
In our view the Government must take the lead. Industry can help provide a healthier diet by, inter alia, progressive improvement in nutritional value while lowering the energy density of all foods. - Yours, etc,
