Sir, - I refer to your report on the O Conaire statue by Lorna Siggins (The Irish Times, August 14th). I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that the vandalised statue had become a "tourist attraction".
I would have thought that "a disgrace" would have described the sad neglect more appropriately. The attack on the statue was bad - but for the authorities in Galway to leave it unprotected in the interim is, in my opinion, highly irresponsible.
My father, Albert Power RHA, designed and created this beautiful piece of art at our home/studio in Berkeley Road, Dublin, when I was a child. It is my request that the people of Ireland protect it as a precious piece of our heritage. - Yours, etc.,
