Sir, - Your report on moderation-orientated cue exposure (MOCE) from the Psychological Society of Ireland weekend in Ennis - and indeed the prominence given to it - may present a wholly distorted picture of the treatment of alcoholism and mislead many well-meaning people (The Irish Times, November 17th).
The very great majority of those of us involved in the treatment of alcoholics would regard such a programme as dangerous in the extreme. Alcoholism is an insidious progressive potentially lethal disease and to give such prominence and implied credibility to such unorthodox views is hardly responsible journalism. - Yours, etc.,
From Dr Patrick J. Nugent
