Sir, – It was great to see the Aviva stadium full on Tuesday to show appreciation for Ireland’s qualification to next summer’s finals. I was intrigued to hear the old chants of “olé, olé” and “Ireland are the greatest football team”.
I suppose it was fitting to hear those oldies as many of the people there had not bothered supporting the team since a certain Cork man showed his true colours in 2002. I was also amused that some people were scrambling to have a ticket for last night – it’s easy to follow a team that have qualified – where were they over the past five years in particular? I remember in many games recently not only did my son and I have a choice of seat we had whole rows to choose from. – Yours, etc,
