Madam, - Bearing in mind that the price of oil has reached unprecedented levels, one would imagine that those whose business it is to transport it would try to avoid spilling it on our roads.

The opposite seems to be the case: almost daily we have AA Roadwatch telling us of oil spills sometimes extending for many miles across the country and creating serious hazards for motorists and other road users.

Does anyone know why such spills occur so often, who is responsible for them, who bears the cost of the ensuing clean-up and what regulations, if any, are in force to prevent them? - Yours, etc,
