Madam, - There is an amusing series of advertisments on RTE at present concerning the TV license inspector's attempts to identify those who have not paid their license fee - 18,000 visits a month is a lot of door knocking! In contrast Aer Lingus is running a series of newspaper advertisments to promote shopping trips to the USA. Secure in the knowledge that there is little likelihood returning shoppers will be stopped by customs officers at Dublin airport the advertisment shows shopping bags crammed with goodies on a baggage carousel. In these straitened economic times it bemuses me how these two offices of the state can perform in such a contrasting fashion. - Yours, etc.,
