Sir, - There must never be a return to the party political manner in which the highest position in our Republic used to be filled as a reward for a political career that had ended in Dail Eireann. We must follow the pattern set by President Robinson - a young, vibrant, modern woman representing an Ireland making its way in the world with its head held high, symbolising what we are vocal, forward looking, proud of our position in and contribution to the world.
Mary Robinson's Presidency also showed a very real sense of concern for all minorities in our country, some of whom hitherto; felt unrecognised. She has been a President for all the people of Ireland and, through her, we have stretched our hands across the borders of our island and the world in friendship. She has brought the Presidency to the people in a way never before done.
It is vitally important that what happens now is not a retrograde step, which is what a return to the "elder party political statesman" candidate would be. It is now the immediate task of the Government and Opposition parties to identify and field non party political candidates for the Presidency candidates who have proved their integrity, ability and vision for our nation, who can reflect the complexity of the many intermingling majorities and minorities of our people. - Yours, etc,
Dargle Road, Drumcondra,
