Sir, - I find it difficult to agree with those who argue for the release of Garda McCabe's killers. This Garda was shot dead in the course of a robbery. The proceeds of this robbery were not, I believe, to further enhance the coffers of the Provisional IRA. In fact the PIRA released a statement denying that this was the work of any of its units.
If we are to accept that original statement we may assume that the killers were involved in this crime for their own personal enrichment. Surely this means that they are common criminals and not entitled to be freed under the Good Friday agreement.
I have not read or heard of any remorse for the violent death of this unfortunate man. The smiling faces in last Saturday's Irish Times would appear to confirm this remorselessness. - Yours, etc.,
Joseph Briscoe, Harlech Downs, Clonskeagh, Dublin 14.
