Sir, – The statement by Ruth Coppinger that “the campaign against the household tax is the most significant grassroots movement in this country in decades” is a total indictment of Irish politics and political discourse in this country (Opinion, April 4th).
The country has been bankrupted by the decisions of a small number of its most powerful citizens over the period of the operation of the so-called Celtic tiger.
There was no significant commentary or campaign challenging these decisions during that period.
Yet a proposal to levy a tax on property to make up for some of the shortfall of billions in the money needed to keep the public services going is declared by people of the Left to be the most significant for decades. – Yours, etc,
