People Before Politics?

Sir, - I feel compelled to write to express the anger and disgust my entire family felt recently.

Sir, - I feel compelled to write to express the anger and disgust my entire family felt recently.

My younger brother, who is now 18, suffers from Downs Syndrome. During his younger years he attended school at Dunmore House in Dun Laoghaire, a mere few minutes from home. My family were informed of a decision to transfer him to Grosvenor Road school in Ranelagh to complete his schooling. We were assured at that time his place would be guaranteed back in Dunmore House on a work programme, upon completing his schooling.

When Dunmore House were contacted recently to request his return date, etc, we were informed that although his place was assured, the necessary funding had not been released by the Department of health to enable his return.

Needless to say, we were dismayed at this information and find it inconceivable that in this day and age of economic boom the most vulnerable members of our society should suffer so.

The result of this decision is that a perfectly healthy, albeit mentally handicapped, 18-yearold man is expected to remain at home under the care of my now widowed mother, until the Department of Health deign to release the much needed funds.

As one of family of 11 children, 10 of whom are in the work-force paying an inordinate amount of tax, it is extremely distressing for us all that the necessary funds to ensure the happiness and well-being of our younger and much loved brother are not being made available.

The slogan "People Before Politics" somewhat sticks in the throat. - Yours, etc.,
