Sir, - I concur with the Georgian Society's view of PVC windows (July 24th). The rash of swing-out factory windows that has swept the country in the past ten years is changing the appearance of Ireland for the worse. But more than that, as the Georgian Society points out, the damage that these awful replacements cause will far outlast their lifespan.
I have scratched my head in puzzlement to decide the period which the PVC windows in question were trying to emulate. But does that actually matter? The heritage-isation of Ireland is now surely nearing the point when all the awkward, old, individualistic artefacts have been thrown out in favour of shiny new ones, sold with a guarantee of authentic "period-style". It brings a new twist to the phrase "history in the making"! - Yours, etc.,
