Madam, – I read with interest that an agreement has been reached on the merger of AIB and EBS to form one of the so-called “pillar Irish banks” (Finance, May 27th).
One of the definitions of a “pillar of society” is “a leading figure who contributes to the support and well being of the society in which they live”. I gasp in amazement that such a tag could attach to the merger of AIB and EBS. An oxymoron indeed, and a damn fine one!
– Yours, etc,
