Madam, - It was refreshing to read Eileen Battersby's wonderful article (June 16th) highlighting this year's pipe organ festival in Dublin. As a professional organist and virtually obsessive devotee of what Mozart called "the king of instruments", I'd like to raise a point or two.
Ireland is home to many fine organs dating primarily from the late 19th century.
Many of these instruments are in a parlous state. The costs of new organs range from around €60,000 for a tiny one up to well over €1,000,000 for a substantial cathedral or concert organ.
All fine pipe organs are custom-made and artistically "voiced" for their intended room and are therefore unique works of art, akin to an individual painting.
However, in most places where organs are found (in Ireland almost always churches) the public who hear the instrument regularly are not made aware of the treasure in their midst.
I have played in many beautifully maintained and refurbished churches where the organ is barely functional, to say nothing of closed or declining churches.
We need to see the pipe organ as intrinsic to the fabric of its location and so worthy of the same degree of care as the rest of the building. What private individual would allow an asset worth €500,000 to fall into decrepitude?
Finally, I would encourage your readers to look out for the organ the next time they're in a house of worship or hall. These treasures are here for everyone and we should cherish them. - Yours, etc,
