Sir, - the letter of Jaime Dominiquez of Ibiza (October 23rd) is very timely. He highlights, presumably from experience of similar blight in his native tourist area, what, to the horror and dismay of all who love those places, is being repeated by "experts" all over County Mayo. They seem never to have heard of the word amenity or learned from the well-documented experience of unhindered building in other tourist areas.
At present in Achill the face of Slievemore is being scarred irremediably by a development of holiday homes that incredibly is proceeding with full permission of the local planning authorities. But this is only the latest of their decisions taken without any recognition of the disastrous effects on the scenic locale.
