Sir - I read with interest the report (The Irish Times, June 17th) of the meeting of the Dublin City County council's planning committee. I am dismayed that the proposal for the high rise development on George's Quay was not summarily rejected.
It would be tragic if this development were allowed to proceed so close to the historic heart of Dublin. Certainly all high rise development should be restricted to areas which will not impact so adversely on the character and openness of the city centre and the river front. It would seem appropriate only if high rise buildings were limited to designated areas such as the lands beyond the point depot.
The strongest argument against high rise structures is surely are two tallest buildings, Liberty Hall and O'Connell Bridge House. These always bring to mind the remarks of Joan O'Connor, a former head of the RIAI, who described high rise development as pieces if sculpture punctuating the skyline. Sculpture they are not, punctuation they are - two large exclamation marks!! Yours etc.,
