Sir, – I refer to your report on the proposed development of a 1916 museum on Moore Street in a Chartered Land briefing to city councillors (Home News, January 15th). The Dublin City Council Committee was not set up as you report “to review plans for the 1916 national monument”. Its terms of reference are in fact much wider – the committee will “review, report on and make recommendations to the City Council in respect of the overall Moore Street development with particular emphasis on the preservation, use and development of the 1916 evacuation route and the Moore Street buildings occupied by the rebels”.

The development of a 1916 museum, while welcome, should not distract attention from Chartered Land’s overall plan for this historic area.

Its proposal will see the destruction of protected structures of the monument itself and the obliteration of surrounding streets, laneways and buildings directly linked to 1916.

Interested parties can make submissions to the committee at msac@dublincity.ie before January 31st. – Yours, etc,

JAMES CONNOLLY
