Madam, - Lorna Siggins's English friend is fooling her when he says that, unlike their Irish equivalents, British politicians do not turn up at the openings of new motorways or bypasses (An Irishwoman's Diary, September 5th).

Of course they do. As has been said many times, most would turn up to the opening of an envelope (brown or otherwise).

In attending functions of this kind, politicians ignore the lesson of William Huskisson MP, who attended the opening of the Liverpool to Manchester railway in 1830 only to be run over and killed by a train - the first such casualty in history. - Yours, etc,
