Sir, - The term "native American" is endangered, but not for the reason Kevin Myers suggests (An Irishman's Diary, September 11th).Recent archaeological digs in the north-west United States have uncovered bones which are unquestionably caucasoid. These bones date to 15,000 years ago, predating the so-called "native Americans", much to the dismay of the Politically Correct crowd.Further digs may offer more evidence that the "native" Americans were whites and, in one of the ironies of history, they were displaced by new tribes entering the continent through the Bering Strait, in the usual manner of migrations. History has a way of contradicting cherished political beliefs. - Yours, etc.,Laurence T. May Jr,Cambridge, Massachusetts,USA.
