Madam, - The latest Irish Times/TNS mrbi opinion poll does not bode well for the proposed alternative coalition of Fine Gael, Labour and the Greens. In part, this is due to Enda Kenny's fudging on matters of critical national importance such as the Government's decentralisation programme.

Mark Brennock (Opinion & Analysis, January 20th) suggests that the alternative government needs a Big Idea. Maybe, maybe not.

Quite simply the next general election should be called the SSIA-MRSA election. The electorate's choice will reflect its values. Whether it opts for wealth over health may well say more about the Irish people than Irish politicians. - Yours, etc,
