Madam, - Your report "Pope's easing of Latin Mass rules gets mixed reaction" (The Irish Times, July 9th) shows an important dichotomy. Support for the freeing of the Latin Mass, in general, comes from the people and resistance to it, in general, comes from the clerical and theological establishment.
In freeing the Latin Mass, Pope Benedict has taken a courageous step to restore the balance between popular Catholicism and clerical and academic vested interests. As a 29-year-old who has spent 12 years receiving "maybes" and "nevers" from bishops regarding the Latin Mass, I wonder if the clerical establishment will be able to listen to the voice of the Pope and the voice of the people. - Yours, etc,
THOMAS MURPHY, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
