Madam, - It is devoutly to be wished that when a priest celebrates Mass in the Tridentine Rite, his maniple will be stiff and his chasuble the shape of a cello; that his alb will be transparent with lace at elbow and knee, so girdled that the pleats fall in symmetry; that a bobbin will crown his biretta and his arms be restricted lest they extend beyond the width of his shoulders when he says "Dominus vobiscum" and "Orate fratres".
Furthermore, his bells should be discreet and his gong be muffled. He should be profligate with incense and restrained in gesture. He should preach in Latin to encourage the laity and ensure that they do not flee before the last gospel.
And through this mist, strange sound and costume, it is hoped that we will espy that Galilean who rose from a tomb after execution, explained the scriptures in the language of his companions, was recognised in the breaking of bread and asked us to gather in his memory. - Yours, etc,
