Madam, – I have been studying the extensive coverage given in the British press on the forthcoming visit of the Pope to their shores. There has been quite a bit of negative comment, with many observers and commentators taking the view that the invitation should never have been extended – much in the same vein as what is being reported here on the proposal to extend an invitation to the Queen of England to visit these shores.
However, I have yet to come across a single letter or view expressed that the invitation to the Pope should be welcomed as a sign of how the British populous is “maturing”. It appears they don’t do self-flagellation with the same relish as some people do here. – Yours, etc,
