Madam, - The current crisis in Kenya highlights yet again that the international community has no effective method of coming to the aid of vulnerable people caught up in a crisis in the developing world.
In recent years millions have died in places such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Congo and Darfur due to the apathy of the West. Now we are seeing the beginnings of a similar failure in Kenya.
But why does this happen, when there are international bodies that could intervene? What is the role of the UN peacekeepers? What is the role of Nato? What is the role of the recently formed European Union battlegroups? I am sure the many millions who are likely to be affected over the coming years by violence and genocide in the developing world would love to know the answer. - Yours etc,
JOHN O'SHEA, Goal, Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
