A chara, - It is good to see from Lorna Siggins (May 25th) that Liam Scallan of Western Development Commission, Castlebar, is alert to the value of the 70 mile right of way that, relaid, could become a part of Ireland's freight link, Rosslare, Limerick, Athenry, Collooney, Enniskillen (yes) Derry (yes), relaid, forming a three quarter circle over Ireland. Breach it now, or have it as a foot walkers' way, and we shall weep salt tears in 10 years.
By that time our magnificent £10 billion spurs of motorway will be so crowded and dangerous that many will wish to transfer freight and artics on to the unobstructed track, as Britain is doing right now. (But is anybody listening?)
And our National Roads Authority from their HQ on Waterloo Road, do they really know where they are going? The four mile Newlands to Rathcoole dual way, up from four lane to six lane, at a cost of 50 million! I predict that, within 20 years, our fancy new bits of motorway will require a further £20 billion expended. Mind you, I am in favour of safe roads, but does the NRA know where they are going? - Le meas. Uinseann Mac Eoin,
