Sir, - I would like to draw your attention to the recent finding of the CSO that the rate of marriage breakdown doubled between 1986 and 1996. Could these marriages have been saved through early intervention or long-term preventive and maintenance programmes for relationships?
Government allocation of funding for 80 organisations such as MRCS amounted to £900,000 in both 1996 and 1997, the latter being the year in which divorce was finally introduced to Ireland. Contrast this with the millions allocated to the Arts Council and other similar bodies.
What does this allocation tell us about Government priorities? - Yours, etc.,
From Ruth Barror
