Madam, - Nine out of 10 times I agree with Kevin Myers, but I fear he has once again veered off the rails.
In his Irishman's Diary of (July 7th) he argues against the release of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I have heard no case for their release being made either on the streets or within the media's realm of opinion and analysis. People don't want these men released; they want to see them granted a fair trial, to be assumed innocent until proven guilty, and then to be released or punished according to a court's verdict.
This desire is not some liberal whim of the left, but rather is central to the very fundamentals of a free society, the very same ideology this war against terror is purporting to protect.
Such trials would not assist or provide support to terrorism, as some claim. They would serve to bolster justice and morality in a world that appears to lack both.
This is what so many people wish to see and, according to the US Supreme Court, it is also what the US constitution dictates. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - The danger to us all posed by fanatics, bent upon world domination, and willing to use nuclear weapons if the opportunity arose, may indeed explain the detention of certain Afghans and others at Guantanamo Bay. But it also raises the question of why Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Perle and their like are still free. - Yours, etc.,
