Madam, - After meeting the Canadian prime minister last Tuesday, the Taoiseach defended his failure to honour a solemn pledge given to the UN five years ago to meet its development aid target of 0.7 per cent of GNP by 2007: "I would not have been able to explain [keeping that promise] to the Irish electorate," he argued (The Irish Times, July 6th).
Come now, Mr Ahern: you underestimate both your own and your electorate's casuistic capacity. An unbroken politician's promise is difficult - but not impossible - to explain. - Yours, etc,
CONOR RODDY, O'Rourke Park, Sallynoggin, Co Dublin.
