Madam, – Amid the calls for a national government, three cheers for Anthony Leavy (October 2nd) for injecting a bit of common sense into the debate. HJ Beckett called for a national government “to get the country out of the doldrums” but gives no rhyme or reason as to how this could happen, especially as the new “national government” would consist of members of the current government.

As long as we have thinking people like Mr Leavy, then there is hope that the country has not lost its head in a blind panic. – Yours, etc,
