Madam, – I write in support of Prof Seán Tierney (May 8th) seeking action to protect householders from exposure to radiation from radon gas which is the cause of some 200 lung cancers per year, many of which have very serious consequences. Unlike the very small risk to us all from the nuclear power industries in other countries, this risk from radon gas is not only large but is “home made”. It can, however, be minimised or even eliminated by our own corrective actions. These actions involve several authorities and require co-ordination and direction as advised by the the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. The Government needs to take charge. – Yours, etc
