Madam, - I want to add a sense of perspective and reason to the debate on the education savings measures, as I feel the teachers have gone over the top in their protests.

We are living in changed times, and sacrifices have to be made whether we like it or not. Difficult times call for difficult choices - I think we all need to understand that.

I know that there are funding restrictions in a number of areas. But surely these were the inevitable result of the more challenging economic environment and the need to manage our resources?

In relation to class sizes, I believe it is still the case that the quality of the teacher is paramount, rather than the quantity of the class.

At a time when thousands of workers are losing their jobs, I think it is unfair of teachers to be pushing this issue at this time.

We all have a part to play in getting Ireland through the economic turmoil - hopefully teachers will realise that. . . - Yours, etc,
