A chara, – Kevin P McCarthy defends the higher rates of pay in the public sector (November 2nd). However, you don’t have a right to extra money just because more people in the sector you work in have third level degrees, are “on average four years older” or “have five years greater experience”.
Worth, value and price are generally determined by supply and demand. Factors such as levels of innovation and degree of efficiency also play a significant part. Wishing to insulate a massive section of the workforce from these normal economic principles is as daft as assuming the prices of houses and land can only ever go up. – Is mise,
